![]() It’s pretty much the same thing Namco did with Tekken 3, and we know how great that game turned out to be! Just like in Tekken 3, we have a brand new protagonist in the form of Patroklos Alexander, son of Sophitia. SoulCalibur V is essentially a reboot of sorts to the series in the sense that it has advanced time by several years in the game world so that many new characters can join the fray. ![]() ![]() Well, the fans won… But was it all worth it? They had no intention of reviving the series until fans annoyed the heck out of Tekken’s lead producer Katsuhiro Harada on Facebook and Twitter, begging him to convince Namco to get Project Soul back together again for another stab at glory. Now here we have SoulCalibur V, a game that in all honesty shouldn’t even exist! After the previous title failed to sell well, Namco disbanded Project Soul (their internal dev team that makes the Soul games). Long time fans bemoaned SoulCalibur IV, but I loved it to pieces. Granted most of my time was spent creating characters, but in total I clocked over a hundred hours with the fighter. Prior to SoulCalibur IV, I only played SoulCalibur II in a noisy Las Vegas arcade.Īs someone who was late to getting into the series, I made up for it by playing the heck out of SoulCalibur IV. Between Soul Blade and today, my exposure has been pretty limited with the series. Do I remember much about it? Not really, except ring outs and Voldo. I still vividly remember playing the original Soul Blade in arcades back in 1997. It's true that SCIII is the last game with meaty single player modes. It’s hard to believe just how old the Soul series is now. SCIV's single player wasn't that great anyway. It's true that SCIII is the last game with meaty single player content. But it doesn't have the single player content the series is known for, so it would be a disappointment to people who buy SC for that aspect. Plus a ton of stages for variety over the lifespan of the multiplayer.Īs a fighting game, SCV is extremely good, some think it's the best playing game in the series. With no faith in the franchise from Namco, the team performed triage and basically focused on the parts of the game that people would be playing the longest: multiplayer and making stuff in the character creator. In concept, V cleans the story up and starts with a new one years later.Īnd SCV is essentially the game that just focuses on the gameplay. The problem is that every game after that (until V) was a retread of the story that never really went anywhere and was incoherent. Soul Calibur has interesting lore and backgrounds to all the characters. ∺ctually, some of the voice-overs are already taken but havent been used, so we want to make use of it somehow, but we dont know how thats going to be. he said. He added that many of the other planned stories got full voice-overs during SoulCalibur Vs development, but there has been no decision on how to use them yet. Our first plan on the storyboard was that we had every characters story, and actually we do have it in the studio, but time-wise, man power-wise we werent able to do it and only one fourth of what we planned to do is in the game. Odashima told The Train2Game Blog. The story of the released game mainly focuses on two characters, Patrokolos and his sister Pyrrha, opposed to each character on the roster having their own individual story as previous games in the series do. He explained that Namco Bandai team didnt have the staff or the time needed realise their full vision for Soul Calibur Vs story. Thats according to game director Daishi Odashima who was speaking to Train2Game in a soon to be published interview. SoulCalibur Vs story mode was originally planned to be four times bigger than it actually is, but time restraints meant it needed to be cut back. ![]()
